The signing of Ronan Curtis last year didn’t do too much to excite fans at first, but one full season later, it’s hard to picture where Portsmouth would be without him.
The Irish winger has been a revelation in his first year in English football, scoring 11 goals and assisting 12 as Pompey finished in an automatic promotion spot, and after such a successful transfer, it is understandable why Portsmouth are reportedly heading back to Ireland for summer signings.
According to the Irish independent, Pompey are interested in Cork City defender Sean McLoughlin, who is like to leave the Rebel Army this summer after impressing in the League of Ireland for the past two seasons.
The Ireland U-21 centre-back has been the centre of interest from English sides before when Preston North End reportedly inquired about the defender last January but were put off with Cork’s £200,000 price tag for McLoughlin.
The price for McLoughlin might seem steep, but the defender would be worth the money if Matt Clarke, who has been linked with a move away from Portsmouth this summer, departs the south coast, allowing Kenny Jackett to see if lightning can strike twice.
Portsmouth landed a bargain with Curtis, and now 12 months later the club could sign another starlet from Ireland in the form of McLoughlin, who could be a suitable replacement for Clarke if the defender leaves for greener pastures this summer.
Portsmouth fans, would McLoughlin be a good signing? Let us know!
