Leeds fans were full of praise for a host of players on Saturday afternoon, but there was also very special plaudits from a certain Phil Hay for one individual.
That was reserved for Tyler Roberts who shone off the bench for Marcelo Bielsa’s men.
What’s he said?
Leeds were at their free-flowing best yesterday afternoon as they put Hull City to the sword.
It didn’t take them long to get going as Luke Ayling fired the Whites in front, but the full demolition came after half time.
Pablo Hernandez found the corner of the net before a double from Roberts sealed the points. A 4-0 win isn’t something we’ve come to expect from a Leeds side underperforming their xG but this said a lot about the potential they have.
There’s no denying that if Bielsa’s team continue to perform like this, they’ll stand an excellent chance of securing a place in the Premier League. If Roberts also finds the back of the net with the same regularity, their chances will further increase.
Speaking about the forward following the game, Hay had the following words to say in his Q&A for The Athletic.
“Roberts is a very talented player. There were plenty of clubs in for him when Leeds signed him but injury has interfered with his career here so many times. His anticipation and his finishing today is exactly what you’re looking for. The build-up play to his first was a dream and his header for his second was brilliant.”
Bamford beware
This should send a major warning to Bamford about his performances. Bielsa has a big dilemma over what he does between now and the end of the season in his forward line.
The former Middlesbrough man has been the undisputed number 9, leading the line from the start on all but two occasions in the Championship.
Although he’s only scored 12 goals this term, the 26-year-old is crucial to the manager’s system at Elland Road. His pressing and hold-up play are key components of his game but if Roberts continues to score goals, Bielsa may not have any other option but to finally drop Bamford to the bench.

Bielsa also has Jean-Kevin Augustin to think about. The Frenchman wasn’t in the squad on Saturday because of injury and following a January loan move from RB Leipzig, he’s played just 49 minutes of first-team action.
Roberts’ form is bad news for Augustin, but you sense it’ll take a lot more for the former West Brom man to convince Bielsa to drop Bamford.
Although there is a debate to be had, the latter is Bielsa’s go-to man. It’s unlikely he’ll be ditched in the immediate future.
Meanwhile, check out the moment that Leeds fans have waited 205 days to FINALLY see…
