Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has revealed that Phil Jones will not be fit to face Newcastle United in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Jones was sent home early from England duty after picking up an injury during the first half of Friday’s goalless draw against Germany.
The centre-back was seen to be wearing heavy strapping on his thigh during the clash at Wembley, although it had been thought that the issue was only minor.
Mourinho, however, has ruled the former Blackburn Rovers youngster out of the Newcastle match, where United will be looking to return to winning ways in the league.
The Red Devils boss has claimed that he was ‘naive’ to allow Jones to join up with the England squad when many players in a similar situation were given a rest during the international break.
Mourinho told reporters:
“You have always some clubs where their players, they have always have something. It could be a fingernail, he has a little flu, he has a problem with the little toe, and they withdraw, and they stay with their clubs and they have their holidays and they have their rest.
“Then, there are always the clubs where the mangers are naive (holding up his hand to say ‘me’), too pure and they say you have to go and they go and sometimes they pay the price and they pay the price.
“I want to see this next weekend if the players that were not going to the national team, I want to see if they are going to play. [Danny] Drinkwater? [Fabian] Delph? The only one that is not playing is Phil Jones.”
The absence of Jones, who is valued at £16.2m by transfermarkt.co.uk, means that Chris Smalling, who was left out of the England squad, is expected to play alongside Eric Bailly at the heart of the defence.
Mourinho should give fitness updates on Paul Pogba and Zlatan Ibrahimovic in his pre-match press conference at United’s training ground on Friday afternoon.
